Secure Video Content: Methods for securing your video content online

Methods for securing video content

To protect video content, different methods can be used or combined. You’ve probably heard of digital rights management (DRM). Content owners often require costly DRM for certain content; for example, Hollywood movies. However, video content can also be protected without DRM.

The following methods can be used

  • Encrypted transmission (HTTPS)
  • Adaptive streaming
  • URL tokenizing
  • Geo-/IP Blocking
  • AES HLS Encrypted
  • Video Streaming
  • Digital Rights Management
  • Encrypted transmission (HTTPS)

In general, it is recommended to transfer all content using HTTPs. Our platform has supported this by default for several years.

Adaptive Streaming
Generally, your video should be transmitted using the streaming methods HLS, DASH or Smooth Streaming. This has the advantage of protecting the content, as the videos are split into small segments. It can also add additional information, such as ID3 information, or compensate for strong network fluctuations at the end user.

URL Tokenizing
Now that the videos are equipped with modern streaming protocols; and are transmitted in portions, the individual portions should be delivered with a so-called tokenizing. Each individual request is provided with a token. This ensures that the transmitted video portions can only be used for the valid session.

Geo-/IP Blocking
If content is to be made available to a very specific target group, e.g. within the company or only in certain regions or countries, you can regulate this using Geo-/IP Blocking. For example, you can define a whitelist for a specific IP network.

AES HLS Encrypted Video Streaming
In addition to the encrypted transmission of each individual segment file (video portion), the respective transmitted file is encrypted. In order to play the video, the respective video player requires a key.

Digital Rights Management
If the above procedures are not sufficient, or if the respective licensor requires the use of a DRM system, all content can be additionally encrypted using DRM procedures Widevine, PlayReady or Fairplay.

Conclusion
To protect your videos, you can use or combine different methods. In general, we recommend at least the use of HTTPS, URL tokenizing and adaptive streaming.
